“Look, I don’t want to start anything.”

Bear tilted his head and stared at his brother. He’d been trying to get what was wrong out of him for at least the last hour. He’d been subdued all day, and with only a short time before the run, Bear wanted to get it out in the open and have his brother back to his normally cheerful mood so they could enjoy themselves.

He’d expected his brother to protest that nothing was wrong, but he hadn’t expected to hear him say he didn’t want to start anything.

“What do you mean? What are you going to start?”

“I’m not, that’s the point.”

“Fallon,” he warned.

“Promise you’re not going to go off.”

“I can’t promise what my reaction will or will not be if I have no idea what you’re talking about, can I now?”

“Sheila introduced herself to Trevor,” Fallon blurted, then licked his lips and chewed on his lower one.

Bear leaned back. That was another surprise. He was sure nobody from the gathering would even make themselves known to Trevor with his scent all over him. “Did she?”

“She did.”

“And how do you know that?”

“I went to see him earlier, to invite him over. And he mentioned meeting her.”

“And?”

Fallon cleared his throat. “She told him that a lot of people were getting together tonight. I think he didn’t want to come, because of that.”

Bear took a few steadying breaths. “When you asked me earlier if you should invite him, I said no. Why did you?”

“I wanted to invite him. But, even if I hadn’t liked him, I would have because of the way you’ve been acting all day!” Fallon threw his hands up. “I’ve never seen you so . . . so preoccupied, and mopey.”

“I am not mopey.”

“Oh, you are.”

Bear paced, not sure what he was going to do. “So she went to see him. Yeah, that pisses me off, and I’ll have to have a chat with Sheila to be sure she understands how unappreciated such a gesture is. My scent was on him. That was—”

The horrified look on Fallon’s face kept him from finishing.

“What? Tell me.”

Fallon put one hand on his shoulder and another on his chest. “As long as you’ll stay calm.”

“Fal—”

“Her scent was all over him.” Fallon’s hand tightened on his shoulder, palm pressing harder against his chest. “Now, don’t go off half-cocked or anything. Bear. Bear?”

Bear was too furious to speak. He felt his eyes change, felt instinct rise up and threaten to take him over. Trevor was his, and she scented him?

He took a few deep breaths, blinked his eyes back to normal. What the hell was he thinking? Trevor wasn’t his. He’d transferred his scent to the boy to keep the rest away from him for Trevor’s own good, not because Trevor belonged to him.

That was why he’d done it, right?

He frowned at Fallon. “Stop acting like my head’s going to explode.”

“Isn’t it?” Fallon peered up at him with his head tucked down, like he really was worried Bear might pop any second.
